non diagetic sound from Juli.C. on Vimeo.
Having trouble w/ comments section so to respond to Lynn's comment: In the original "children playing" video there is also the sound of a sliding glass door. To me this sound implied to the viewer that there is another character in the shot who is heard closing the door, but not seen. I did try to bump the audio of the door closing to make it more apparent, as I wasn't sure if people would notice it & therefore = non-diagetic!). This character then goes on to press play on his voice mail & hears the phone message which is left for him. In this way I considered the audio diagetic, although the children didn't hear the message, the off-screen character did & they exist within the same environment, in the first film.
there were a lot of jump cuts but other then that it was good =D
ReplyDeleteThe first version was really interesting, as a piece of art. It's subtle (which is your specialty), with the answering machine recording and then the sounds of children outside. I like it.
ReplyDeleteI like the videos. But im not sure if your orig.video audio was removed from your non diegetic video..
ReplyDeleteThe background noise of the children is a nice touch with the voicemail.
ReplyDeleteThe song kind of overpowers the children yelling but the song works well with the non-diagetic aspect.
I love the idea of the message and the sound of the children playing in the background. I found the small snowflakes to be meditative and the shot choice to be interesting at the ground.
ReplyDeleteThe voicemail with the sound of the children was sad and interesting. The fact that the kids were left anonymous was a good decision. It could have been about anyone's child. The non-diegtic video was less compelling for me because the diegetic was so nice.

The first piece labeled diegetic is very intriguing. On it's own it is a strong project. I love the composition of the shot. It is not diegetic however. Diegetic sound is audio that only exists within the environment of the story. Here's a link to clarify the differences between diegetic and non-diagetic sound. You made two good diegetic videos.
